Welcome to the University of Texas at Arlington Department of Mathematics National Alliance webpage. A supportive graduate program: Our department offers graduate studies leading to M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and the graduate program has a high retention and graduation rate. Our Ph.D. program currently has 75 doctoral students, most of whom are supported by fellowships (GAANN, NSF-GK12, NSF-Bridge-to-Doctorate), graduate teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
A student oriented study environment: Graduate students are provided with good office spaces and many opportunities including excellent mentoring, close interactions with faculty, funding to attend professional conferences, and participation in sponsored research projects. They participate in various professional, outreach, and peer mentoring activities, and they themselves run chapters of MAA, AWM, SIAM, and other organizations in the collegial and diversified atmosphere of our department.
A great place to be: Our university is a major research institution with over 33,000 students, including 8,000 graduate students. The campus is located in the heart of the dynamic Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area and is a 15-minute drive from the DFW International Airport. The DFW metroplex is a major financial and industrial center and a home for many cultural and sports attractions. It has a diverse population of over six million, low cost of living, one of the most vibrant economies in the nation, and a mild climate.

Programs offered
Our department offers graduate studies leading to M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Our graduate program has a high retention and graduation rate, our M.A. program is mainly focused on secondary school mathematics teaching, and our M.S. and Ph.D. programs are designed to produce mathematicians who are highly qualified to enter professions in academia or industry. Our Ph.D. program has 75 doctoral students, most of whom are supported by our fellowships (GAANN, NSF-GK12, NSF-Bridge-to-Doctorate), graduate teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
Admission to the Ph.D. program: There are two routes to enter our Ph.D. program: either enter with an M.S. degree already at hand (or with more than 30 graduate hours in math), or directly enter the Ph.D. program with a B.S. degree (via the B.S.-to-Ph.D. track). On average, in the former case (entering with an M.S. degree) it takes 4 years to get a Ph.D. degree, and in the latter case (B.S.-to-Ph.D.) it takes 5 years to earn a Ph.D. degree.
Requirements at a glance: The Ph.D. degree candidates complete required courses, pass three written preliminary exams (linear algebra, mathematical analysis, and a third in their specialty), pass an oral comprehensive exam, write a thesis, and pass an oral thesis defense exam.
Areas of study: Active research areas in our department include algebra, differential and integral equations, applied analysis, geometry, mathematical biology, applied and mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, computational mathematics, and mathematics education.
Funding opportunities

Graduate Teaching Assistantship
- Entry level: stipends up to $2,250/month (9 month support: $20,250)
- Standard Level (passed the preliminary exams): up to $2,400/month (9 month support: $21,600)
- Senior Level (dissertation stage): up to $2,550/month (9 month support: $22,950)
- Additional benefits (full tuition waiver, travel support, mentoring)
GAANN Fellowship
- 12-month stipend of at least $25,000 (maximum stipend $30,000)
- Additional benefits (full tuition waiver, travel support, educational allowance, mentoring)
NSF Bridge-to-Doctorate Fellowship
- 12-month stipend of $30,000
- Additional benefits (full tuition waiver, health insurance, travel support, educational allowance, mentoring)
