In 2002, was accepted as a GAANN Fellowship student in a Mathematics PhD Program at The University of Iowa. He defended his PhD thesis on Nonatomic Generalized Factorizations over Integral Domains in 2008, under the supervision of Dr. Daniel D. Anderson. Currently, Matiel is the Associate Chair of Mathematics at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, his Alma Mater. He belongs to the alliance board; representing the Caribbean Regional Alliance. His current research interests include number theory, commutative algebra, commutative ring theory and generalized factorizations over domains. Matiel acted as a faculty mentor to many undergraduate students in the last 6 years. He has directed 20 undergraduate students into undergraduate research in the last 6 years and currently as a faculty adviser of 4 graduate students.
