Bio

I'm originally from Brazil, and came to the U.S. in 1985 to do my graduate studies in mathematics. I received my doctoral degree in mathematics at Caltech in 1989, with a dissertation in the area of dynamical systems. Since then, I've lived for a year in Berkeley, where I was a post-doc at the Mathematical Sciences Research institute, and three years in Chicago, as a post-doc at the University of Chicago, before coming to St. Louis to join the faculty at Washington University in 1993. My main areas of interest in mathematics are differential geometry (Riemannian geometry, symplectic geometry), and probability theory (Markov chains, statistical mechanics). Although part of my research is in pure math, I also collaborate with chemical engineers. I find it very enjoyable interacting with people from other academic disciplines and seeing how interesting and deep math problems can often arise from very practical ideas.
