Bio
I am a Professor of mathematics at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. After graduating in 1998 with a B.S. in mathematics from Calvin College, I completed my Ph.D. at Western Michigan University under the direction of Dr. Allen Schwenk. I also have a Master's degree in negotiation, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding from California State University-Dominguez Hills.
Most of my research involves problems from the mathematical social sciences. In my dissertation and several subsequent projects, I studied the mathematical properties of preferences associated with referendum elections. I have also studied gerrymandering and some topics from social conflict theory. A few years back (2005), I co-authored a book on the mathematics of voting and elections, which was published by the American Mathematical Society. I am also the co-author of Abstract Algebra: An Inquiry-Based Approach, published by Taylor & Francis / CRC Press in 2013.
One of things I enjoy most about my work is mentoring undergraduate research. In fact, most of my published work has been the result of collaborative research with students. I am the co-director of Grand Valley State University's NSF-funded summer mathematics REU, and I hope in the coming years to be able to invite several Alliance Scholars to take part in the program.
