Bio

Brendan Sullivan received a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from Hamilton College, and a M. Sc. and D.A. (Doctor of Arts) in Mathematical Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University. He is now a Lecturer in the Mathematics Department at Emmanuel College, one of the Colleges of the Fenway in Boston, MA.

For his doctoral dissertation, Brendan wrote a textbook, along with supplementary course materials, for an "Introduction to Proofs" transition course that teaches students about the reading and writing of mathematical proofs. Initially, he pursued a Ph. D. with a focus on analysis and differential equations, but he eventually became more interested in the exposition of mathematics. He is always willing to talk about the Doctor of Arts degree with anyone and is hoping to see it become more well-known and popular in the mathematical community.

Nowadays, Brendan oversees and collaborates on undergraduate research projects in combinatorics and graph theory. In particular, his research group studies the game of Cops & Robbers played on graphs. Also, through teaching a survey course for non-mathematics students at a liberal arts college, he has developed an active interest in the theory of voting and elections.
