Kansas State University: Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Kansas State University is a dynamic and supportive unit with an excellent
environment for pursuing graduate studies. The department has thriving research groups in most major areas
of mathematics. In addition to analysis, algebra, and topology, there are a strong working group in number
theory, a center for the study of mirror symmetry and tropical geometry, an interdisciplinary group in network
optimization, a center for the integration of undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral research, and a center
devoted to mathematics education.

Programs offered
PhD in Mathematics
• MS in Mathematics
• Graduate Certificate in Applied Mathematics, which provides a multidisciplinary option for students
who wish to strengthen their background in mathematics and engineering before embarking on a
career in industry.
• Graduate Certificate on Quantitative Techniques of Data Science, which provides training in the
theory and practice of data analytics, including both technical skills and social and ethical
considerations.

Funding opportunities
Every student who is not funded externally is offered employment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. This
salaried position provides a tuition waiver to support a full-time course load, as well as an optional
subsidized health insurance policy. Assistantships can be further supplemented by a number of awards in
teaching and academics. Additionally, incoming graduate students with excellent records are eligible to be
nominated for the Timothy R. Donoghue Graduate Scholarships, which provide a substantial financial
supplement and can be held up to two years.

Student body profile

The K-State Mathematics Department provides abundant flexible opportunities that support every student’s
chosen career path. In addition to the teaching experience the GTA position affords, professional
development for students is supported through seminars, including a dedicated First Year Graduate Students
Seminar, an Academic Job Market Workshop, travel to conferences and workshops, and opportunities to
participate in summer schools and internships. Graduate students run a student-only seminar, an NSF funded
graduate student conference, and a Directed Reading Program, which provides undergraduates with
the opportunity to work closely with math graduate students in an independent research project. They also
organize AMS, AWM, and SACNAS Student Chapters. The Math Graduate Program is affiliated with Math
Alliance, of which it is a proud sponsor, and graduate students participate in the Field of Dreams conference
every year.

The department has students and faculty from various states in the US and countries around the world, and
identifies with numerous ethnicities, cultures, and lifestyles.
