Wake Forest University: Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Wake Forest University provides an opportunity to study a wide array of areas of mathematics with faculty members committed to both excellent teaching and excellent research. Our student-faculty ratio is close to 1:1, and we have faculty with research interests in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, representation theory, topology, differential geometry, dynamical systems, differential equations, analysis, modelling of physical and biological phenomena, fluid dynamics, and optimization.

The department hosts an award-winning chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, a math and stats club, and a "Math with Melanin" group. Math graduate students have access to a dedicated graduate student lounge in Manchester Hall. The department has a fund dedicated to student travel to conferences.

Wake Forest University is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Winston-Salem is home to the University of North Carolina school of the arts, as well as numerous galleries and studios. As of 2023, the cost of living in Winston-Salem was 9% below the national average.

Programs offered

We offer an M.S. in Mathematics. This program is intended either as a terminal master's degree, or as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. program. Students can choose either the thesis-option (involving a substantial project), or a non-thesis option (entailing more coursework). The typical student completes our program in 2 years.

Student body profile

The graduate students in our program form a tight-knit community, as there are usually between 20 and 25 students in our program at any time. Our program is suitable both for students intending to pursue a Ph.D. (either in mathematics or a related area), students intending to enter the workforce after completing their master's degree, or those who are uncertain of their future path. Of the graduates in the past 10 years, about 10% have been underrepresented minorities, and about 20% have been international students.

Funding opportunities

Many of the students in our program are supported by teaching assistantships (TAs). TAs do not have to pay tuition, and they receive a stipend of $18,000 per year (for 2023-2024) in exchange for 15 hours per week of work supporting undergraduate instruction in the department. We also award students partial tuition scholarships. These students do not have any work requirements, but must pay some tuition ($9662.50 for the 2023-2024 academic year). Students who do not receive an assistantship are eligible to work on an hourly basis in the department's Math & Stats Center.
