Assistant Professor in Data Science

 Position details: Coe College invites applications from dynamic, student-centered individuals for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Data Science in the Department of Mathematical Sciences to begin August 2019. Review of applications begins on November 16th.

Candidates should be prepared to teach courses in introductory programming, statistical methods, and data management. Ideal candidates would also be able to draw on their expertise and experiences dealing with data-intensive problems to expand the curriculum at Coe College. Areas of interest might include: data mining, machine learning, visualization, information storage and retrieval, numerical methods, mathematical modeling, data security, and network analysis. The normal course load is 6 courses per year, divided among two semesters and a May Term (3-3-0, 2-3-1, or 3-2-1). Coe faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Required Qualifications:

  • ABD status in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field is required. Ph.D
  • preferred.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in the classroom.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity that can be inclusive of undergraduate students.
  • Commitment to undergraduate mentoring through formal and informal advising.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is dedicated to the belief that mathematical sciences and the habits of mind that they engender are necessary components of a liberal arts education. We currently offer majors in computer science and mathematics with support for the study of statistics and actuarial science. The creation of a new position in data science recognizes that the fusion of coding, statistical reasoning, and mathematical modeling will be an integral part of the modern liberal arts experience.
