POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University of Rhode Island (URI), the flagship public research institution in the
State, is a diverse and dynamic community whose members are connected by a
common quest for knowledge. The campus is located near the ocean, and well
connected with the main cities in New England. Computer Science and Statistics
(CSS) at URI is one of the very few departments in the nation where these two
disciplines work in synergy and collaborate on multiple research and educational
projects. Faculty members in the department are actively involved in cutting-edge
research areas including biostatistics, Bayesian methods, machine learning, network
analysis, high-dimensional problems, big data methods, and spatiotemporal
modeling. Several of these areas provide opportunities for multidisciplinary
collaboration with scientists from other fields and for participation in international
projects. We invite applications for a Multicultural Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow with
an expertise in any area of statistics and statistical data science, and a commitment
to bringing new perspectives to our academic programs, course offering, research,
and the institution at large. One of the objectives of this position is to enhance the
capacity of our faculty and students to advance issues of diversity within academic
programs and research. The anticipated start date for the two-year appointment is
August 2020. A thoroughly designed mentoring program with several focus areas
(leadership, research, teaching, grant writing, and outreach) will support the fellow
throughout the duration of the program. Subject to a positive review of teaching and
scholarly activities, the fellow will transition into a full-time, funded, tenure track
faculty position. This transition can happen at the end of the first or of the second
year depending on the progress of the fellow.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach one statistics course per year; conduct research with possible opportunities
for students; give one internal research seminar every year; attend at least one
conference every year and present; participate in faculty meetings and other
departmental activities.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ph.D. with a concentration in statistics, biostatistics, data science or closely
related fields at the time of appointment (August 2020).
2. Demonstrated ability to conduct academic research.
3. Demonstrated experience working with members of diverse and
underrepresented groups.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and/or graduate
courses.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.
6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Demonstrated successful record of publications and/or funded research.
2. Demonstrated teaching and/or mentoring experience at the undergraduate or
graduate level.
