A message from Alliance Director Phil Kutzko

I am very sorry to inform you that our dear friend and colleague, Kathryn Chaloner, passed away on Sunday, October 19 in Iowa City.  Kathryn had a distinguished career as a biostatistician, was Chair of the Biostatistics department at the University of Iowa and was much loved as a colleague, a mother and a loving wife.  Our memory of her will be forever shaped by her remarkable dedication to broadening participation in the mathematical sciences.  In this role, she served as a Principal Investigator on our Alliance grant and was the director of our Alliance Statistics Initiative.  It is no exaggeration, I think, to say that she had made significant headway toward transforming our professions before her untimely passing.  She will be sorely missed.

There will be a memorial service for Kathryn tomorrow, Friday, October 24 in Iowa City.  Here is a link with further information:  http://www.lensingfuneral.com/obituaries/obituary-listings?obId=344392#/obituaryInfo

Kathryn’s family has set up a fund to support a scholarship for underrepresented minority students in the Biostatistics program at the University of Iowa.  The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to this fund.

Kathryn touched the lives of so many of us in the Alliance community.  Please join with us in celebrating her remarkable life.

Phil Kutzko, Alliance Director
