Dr. Adrian Coles, Senior Research Scientist at Eli Lilly and Company, serves as the Math Alliance Director for Industrial Relations. In this role, Dr. Coles advises the executive council on how the Math Alliance can best serve the private sector’s growing need for a diverse workforce with strong mathematical, statistical, and quantitative training. He also serves as a liaison to the private sector and helps to establish connections with companies and associations with which we can build partnerships. He is also the current chair of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Minorities in Statistics, a group that delivers two crucial annual programs that aim to increase participation in statistics and data science by members of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. He leverages the experiences gained from broad participation in diversity and inclusion initiatives in his service to the Math Alliance. Dr. Coles holds a BA in Math from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a PhD in Statistics from NC State University, where he was the first African American male to earn a PhD in Statistics from the time-honored department. Prior to attending graduate school, Dr. Coles served nearly nine years in the United States Marine Corps and has received several military awards and decorations for outstanding service and leadership.
