The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible position in theoretical mathematics at the ranks of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. Anticipated start date is Fall 2022. The Theoretical Mathematics program consists approximately of 17 faculty members, and has close ties with our Applied Mathematics group.

The essential duties of the position will be to conduct research on areas of theoretical mathematics, publish in appropriate high-quality journals, disseminate research at conferences and colloquia, provide quality teaching and mentoring in our undergraduate and graduate programs, and participate in appropriate professional service.

Required Qualifications:

  • a Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics or a closely related area by August 10, 2022.

Desired Qualifications:

  • documented record of published research and strong potential for grant support.
  • demonstrated potential for establishing interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • demonstrated interest in teaching and successfully mentoring a diverse student body.
  • documented experiences and/or expertise indicative of strong support for individuals who have been systemically underserved in the mathematical sciences.

SoMSS currently has 57 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and approximately 96 supported Ph.D. students, along with an additional 50 Ph.D. students and 44 Masters students. The School offers bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. programs in applied mathematics, theoretical mathematics, mathematics education and statistics, as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. The School recently launched an interdisciplinary B.S. degree program in data science, which includes courses in computational mathematics and statistics. The School has excellent computing resources that include individual faculty workstations, several high-performance servers and a small cluster, as well as access to the University’s central computing facilities and the High Performance Computing Initiative. The School has a strongly interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering. There are numerous opportunities for collaboration with interdisciplinary centers and institutes, such as the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), the Biodesign Institute (which includes centers specializing in the nanobiosciences, bioengineering, genomics, and vaccinology), the Institute for Social Science Research, the new College of Health Solutions, the Global Institute of Sustainability, and the nearby Mayo Clinic. The escalating interest in data science research throughout ASU will offer further opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
