Our graduate degree programs are designed to build a solid foundation in mathematics while allowing the flexibility of interdisciplinary learning and research. We offer PhD programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and mathematics education in addition to a Master of Arts degree in mathematics and a Master of Science degree in statistics.

Doctoral Programs:
The School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences offers PhD programs in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Mathematics Education and Statistics. These programs are designed to build a strong foundation in a specific area of mathematics while allowing the flexibility of interdisciplinary research. Master's Programs:
The Master’s of Arts and Master's of Science degrees are designed to increase mathematical and statistical knowledge beyond the traditional Bachelor degree in order to prepare students for careers requiring sophisticated mathematical and statistical skills.
Funding opportunities
Teaching Assistantships:
Teaching assistantships in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) are awarded in early spring for the following academic year (fall and spring semesters). Admission decisions are made first, followed by offers for TA positions. Being admitted to one of our graduate programs does NOT guarantee funding. These positions are highly competitive, with many more applicants than there are assistantships available, and are therefore only offered to graduate students admitted to a graduate program in our School. Priority for funding will be for students admitted to one of the PhD degree programs in the SoMSS, with limited funding available for MA degree-seeking students. Teaching assistant applicants must either speak English as their native language or have a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 100 (IBT). Criteria used in making awards include academic records, letters of reference, and demonstrated ability in English, as measured by the TOEFL. All international students with teaching assistantship positions must take the ASU-administered Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) upon arrival to ASU and receive full certification on the SPEAK after the first two semesters of support to be eligible to compete for continued financial support. International students are encouraged to take the International Teaching Assistant Seminar Course.
Applicants wishing to apply for financial assistance will do so in their online application through the Graduate College. Those already admitted to SoMSS who have not already completed an application can request an application by emailing grad.math@asu.edu.
Differential stipends are employed to reward and encourage students as they progress through their degree programs. The base stipends for master's and doctoral students are fixed at the levels set by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
For administrative purposes, a student's level in any given semester is based on their status at the end of the previous semester. Limited summer support is available in the form of teaching positions during the six-week and eight-week summer sessions pending budgetary approval.
Research Fellowships:
GAANN Graduate Fellowship: The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University has GAANN Fellowships available for the support of doctoral students in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics through funding made available by the US Department of Education Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need. These provide funds for full tuition and a monthly stipend for three academic years. Additional summer funding may be available from SoMSS. The 3-year fellowships are complemented by teaching assistantships for 1 to 2 years to complete our intensive research-and-teaching preparation programs.
Applicants must be US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents and have demonstrated financial need evidenced by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), have superior ability and excellent academic records, and plan a career in teaching or research. Preference will be given to applicants from underrepresented groups in mathematics. The students accepted into our PhD programs and starting in Fall 2013 are also eligible to apply for these Fellowships.

- A cover letter explaining why you should be awarded such an RA.
- A recommendation letter from an ASU faculty, preferably your PhD advisor if you already have one.
- The FAFSA Federal Student Aid report establishing your financial need. You can file this form at www.fafsa.com.
The awards will be for the academic year 2013-14, with the possibility of an extension for up to two more years if making satisfactory progress towards the PhD.
